Climate of Mauritius: A Year-Round Paradise

Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate with mild temperatures throughout the year, complemented by occasional rainfall. However, the most comfortable and pleasant times to visit are between April and June and September and December. As Mauritius lies in the southern hemisphere, its seasons are opposite to those in Europe, offering a welcome escape from northern winters.

Seasons in Mauritius

Summer: November to April

  • Weather: The summer months in Mauritius are characterized by heat and humidity, with temperatures peaking from December to February. These months also bring abundant rainfall, particularly in the central plateau. The highest rainfall usually occurs in February and March.
  • Daylight: Expect daylight hours from 5:30 AM to 7:00 PM.
  • Best Activities: This is the prime season for scuba diving, especially from December to March, as the water visibility is excellent. It is also the best time for deep-sea fishing.
  • Cyclone Season: Mauritius is in the cyclone belt, and the season lasts from November to April. However, due to the island’s small size, cyclones usually pass without causing major damage. In the rare event that a cyclone approaches, it may disrupt vegetation and certain buildings, but rest assured, beach resorts are built to withstand strong winds.

Winter: May to October

  • Weather: Winter brings cooler temperatures, especially in August, when the coastal temperature can drop to 20°C. The prevailing winds blow from the east and southeast, making the climate more comfortable and breezy.
  • Daylight: Daylight hours range from 6:45 AM to 5:45 PM during this period.
  • Best Activities: This is the optimal season for surfing, particularly between June and August when the conditions are perfect for catching waves.

Temperature Variation Across the Island

  • Central Plateau: At about 600 meters above sea level, temperatures range from 20°C in August to 26°C in February.
  • Coastal Areas: Coastal temperatures are generally 3-5°C warmer than those on the central plateau, offering warmer beach weather year-round.
  • Regional Differences: The northern and western parts of the island tend to be warmer and drier compared to the eastern and southern regions, which receive more rainfall and are slightly cooler.
